The Story Behind Whistling Wings Duck Club

This property was acquired in 1993 by Ed and Steve Weinheimer.  This property is a working cattle and haying operation.  Cattle operations are managed and supervised by Weinheimer Brothers Interests, LTD.  A waterfowl hunting operation existed prior to our ownership of this land.  Constant efforts have been made to make the land more productive and improve the hunting.  When this property was acquired, it allowed 8 seasonal deer hunters and 30 seasonal waterfowl hunters.

Our first step, was to discontinue all whitetail deer hunting until the population could increase.   Our next step involved making a long term commitment with Ducks Unlimited and Texas Parks & Wildlife by starting a Texas Prairie Wetlands Project.  We have increased our water acres from 70 to over 250 acres in nine ponds.  These upland ponds are closely monitored all year long to assure a quality environment for waterfowl.  Ponds are pumped up for September Teal season and slow draw downs do not occur until March.   This enables us to provide a habitat for the birds the entire time that they are here.  At least two ponds are kept through June to ensure a good Mottled duck hatch.

Our hard work and dedication paid off in 2004 when we were awarded the Outstanding Lone Star Land Steward Award for Gulf Prairies and Marshes.  This award was given to us for excellence in wildlife habitat management by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the Private Lands Advisory Board.  To see the recent newspaper articles, click here.
